Genetic Analysis Workshops (GAW17)GAWs are a collaborative effort among researchers worldwide to evaluate and compare statistical genetic methods relevant to current analytical problems in genetic epidemiology and statistical genetics. With Kevin Squire, a postdoctoral fellow in Nelson Lab, I join Prof. Berit Kerner and a statistician Tiffany Lin to form a team to participate in GAW17 which will take place in Boston in October. One fun fact is that I will be participating in the workshops under my UCLA affiliation. We are still in preliminary stage at this point. But we are looking into sequencing quality control issue and how it may affect downstream analyses. click here for more information about GAW17. |

Projects and Organizations
Aside from research in Nelson Lab, I try to participate in other activities on campus. I hope to grow the list more as the summer progresses. Lists of my activities participated while at Stanford and Harvard are also available.
UCLA Bioinformatics CommunityI sign up in the UCLA Bioinformatics Community site and hope to get involved in the activities of the community. I hope to connect with as many people in the community here as possible during my time at UCLA. click here for more information about UCLA Bioinformatics Community. |

Phi Kappa PsiSince Winter 2007, I have been a member of California Beta Chapter of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. In 2007-2008, I served as the Scholarship Chair and the Historian, and in 2008-2009, I serve as the Chaplain, the moral/spiritual leader of the Chapter. Though I graduated from Stanford, Phi Psi is still a big part of my identity. I do hope to get involve in Phi Psi alumni activities and stay in touch with my brothers. Damn proud to be a Phi Psi! click here for more information. |

Shiseikan Kyudo DojoIn spring 2008, when I studied abroad in Kyoto, I started training Kyudo (Japanese Archery) at Doshisha University. Once returned to Stanford, I pursued my Kyudo training with Yoshiko Buchanan sensei at Shiseikan Dojo in San Jose, following the standard style of All Nippon Kyudo Federation (ANKF). I passed shodan test in summer 2009 at American Kyudo Seminar in South Carolina. With the lack of ANKF Kyudo dojo in Boston, I am doing my best to practice Kyudo on my own and get remote instruction from Yoshiko-sensei. click here for more information. |

Southern California Kyudo RenmeiAlthough I am a member of Shiseikan Dojo in San Jose, distance makes it difficult to receive instruction from Yoshiko-sensei. As a result, I regularly practice with Owaki-sensei and Sakurai-sensei of Southern California Kyudo Renmei. click here for more information. |

Disneyland Canoe RacesOn Saturdays of June and July, I join canoe practices at Newport Aquatic Center. The practices are organized by Disney Store employees participating in Disney's 47th annual Disneyland Canoe Races. The actual races happen in the River of America in Disneyland with the attraction canoes. It is surprising how seriously they are taking this, and it is certainly a substantial exercise. This is a fun morning exercise that always concludes with a yummy brunch by the beach. Sometimes I would go surf at Huntington Beach afterward, certainly living up my LA life here. click here for YouTube video of the event from last year and here for a news paper cover of the event. |
